Before reading the rest of this section ask yourself " What is Personal Training?" the fact that you have visited this site would suggest that you have some form of interest in it but what is your perception of it?

I believe that a Personal Trainer should.....

  • Discuss short and long term goals
  • Establish a realistic timescale
  • Formulate an appropriate exercise regime
  • Discuss a balanced nutrional plan
  • Monitor physiological changes
  • Offer varied and enjoyable sessions
  • Seperate Fitness facts from Fitness Fiction
  • Provide motivational support

You will have read on my home page that I describe this service as "exclusive" a term perhaps over used in our vocabulary. The reason I refer to this as an exclusive service is that unlike some trainers I don't take on every client that approaches me wanting training. For you to be successful in your fitness or weight loss attempts you need to be in the right frame of mind and have a suitable support network around you. Take the New Years resolution for example, a classic scenario may be to go on a diet, join a gym and stop smoking all at once. This is a huge lifestyle change to take on and dependant on your support network taking such a big task on alone is destined for failure.

The first thing I do with my potential clients is a FREE initial consultation. At this point we will sit down and discuss your reasons for wanting to work with a Personal Trainer. We will cover topics such as past exercise experience, past success and failures and reasons for them.

This is also an opportunity for you to get to know me, when choosing a Personal Trainer you need to ensure that we will be able to establish a strong working relationship, you don't have to like me but respect my advice and understand that I have your best interests at heart, I won't take it personally. From a purely selfish point of view if you succeed in achieving your goals - I succeed and everyone likes to be associated with success!

I was asked this week how long it is before my clients usually start swearing at me and answering back, my reply was usually a couple of weeks but they sing my praises when they go out shopping and slip into a smaller dress size or get that sense of achievement from completing their first 10km Run!

After the initial consultation if we agree to start a training plan a health questionnaire will be completed and static fitness testing conducted, comprising of Blood pressure, resting heart rate, body fat, weight and lung function. This will form measurable progress points and will be recorded in my Body-Talk stat monitoring system.

The next step is to establish your goals, you may want to drop a dress size for holiday, run race for life, prepare for a Police fitness test or simply have more energy to play football with your kids in the garden.

Once a clearly defined goal is in place we need to break this down into long term and short term goals agreeing a timescale for each. This is where my past experience comes in so that I can ensure it is realistic. There is nothing worse than setting the sights too high and failing leading to demotivation and ultimately undoing lots of hard work and likewise by making targets too easy you will be underachieving.
